Just as extreme weather events on Earth can cause huge disruption, space weather can also be damaging to infrastructure on our planet. The Sun continuously ejects large quantities of energetic charged particles, and occasionally it will ‘sneeze’ out material threaded with magnetic fields. When these coronal mass ejections occur, they can directly affect satellite telecommunications, broadcasting, weather services, navigation, power grids and terrestrial communications. ESA is working on the Lagrange mission, which will act as Europe’s space weather early-detection system.
